| "With large flat brushes and
plenty of water I approach the paper
in slam-bang initial washes, and end
with the caress of a butterfly wing.
Fused into the paint is my delight
as qualities and relations emerge
from the process. Thus, a new
reality is re-created which began
with observation but goes beyond
what is to what ought to be." |

DAY 1
SAY IT
WITH FLUENCY, FLUIDITY AND
COURAGE
They say the apple is 90% water.
Lets get to the core of painting
by jumping into more water. In
this workshop we pounce on a wet
paper with a ferocious all over
looseness that gives your paper
an authority like no other
attack. So often we resort to
defensive painting, now is the
time to go on the offensive.
Dare to be bold. If you can’t
pronounce a word say it loud.
|
WHAT CAN YOU
EXPECT FROM
A WEBB WORKSHOP?
Do you love paint? Are you
often found hovering over your
easel, brush in hand, palette set
with clear color, acres of previous
papers trailing behind you while
aiming to communicate with your
unseen audience by means of marks on
paper, mindful of difficulties,
limitations, countless false starts
and failures; yet, dedicated to
producing work of higher
significance?
If you see yourself in this
scenario, then consider joining me
and other painters in this
watercolor painting workshop. All
levels of ability save rank
beginners are welcome. The single,
most important focus will be
pictorial design, which includes
planning, color, tonal values,
expression and visual theme.
Demonstrations, personal instruction
and objective criticism will sharpen
your critical powers. Not only will
you gain a better understanding of
the painting process, but you will
be confident in your new found
skills.
Bring along drawings, photos or
old paintings to serve as your
subjects. With your regular painting
gear include a soft pencil and
sketch paper to plan exciting
designs before painting. If this is
a new procedure for you, guidance
will be available.
Along with Science, Theology and
Philosophy, Art is one of the four
grand inquiries. Those bound
together by art form some of life’s
most significant associations.
Expect to meet new friends. When
returning from the workshop to the
solitude of our own studios we will
be recharged by that temporary
collaboration with gallant peers. |
|
| |
DAY 2
GET THE
HORSE SENSE OF STRUCTURE IN YOUR
WORK
Too many paintings languish in a
bog of mediocrity. A good
painting should not merely copy
the model should be built with
the bricks of design principles.
These can be learned. Armed with
design principles you may not
only better judge the production
of other artists, but more
importantly you will be provided
with a tribunal to judge your
own work.
|
DAY 3
BUILD YOUR
PICTURE
WITH LAYERS
Here is a key to making your
painting glow with mysterious
radiance. Learn to analyze your
subject in layers and then paint
them one at a time. Transparency
is one of watercolor’s greatest
characteristics. Shapemaking is
made easier and more fun when we
learn to make glorious washes
that communicate our delight and
decorate our papers with pizzazz
and transparency.
|
DAY 4
WORKING
WITH
COLOR GALORE
Color is the daily bread of
painting. When one says painting
one says color. Is your color
merely descriptive and copied in
a hum drum way? Learn in this
session how to use color with
strategy and for the sake of
expression. Color is not
something that comes from the
model but should come from the
palette. Let us learn to keep
some of the beauty of color that
comes out of the tube. Often we
corrupt our color with too much
niggling.
|
DAY 5
LEARN TO
MAKE
BRUSH-TIP CALLIGRAPHY
Calligraphy means beautiful
graphic marks. Most any painting
will exude more pep if it has
the dash of calligraphy. It also
is the key to personalizing your
painting. We will explore the
differences between the pointed
brush and the flat brush.
Usually it is a partial
statement combined with another
partial statement of washes. The
partial statement in art invites
the beholder to collaborate in
finishing the painting.

Composition is the gravity
that holds a painting
together. In the actual
world things exist in
accidental position. In the
space of a painting the
painter must deliberately
create right relations of
the parts to the whole.
Here, example-by-example,
you'll see how to compose.
The work of 24 professional
artists included in this
book gives you an over the
shoulder look at how to
apply composition
techniques. Armed with this
information, you can paint a
powerful picture and—equally
important—you can analyze
and improve a work that has
gone wrong. Through an
organized, disciplined text
punctuated with revealing
illustrations, the author
guides the reader in the
skills and thinking process.
This is a sound book, full
of useful advice all serious
students and professionals
are sure to find helpful,
revealing and rewarding.

Going beyond the usual
technical display of
watercolor, Webb’s
paintings express his
interest in the creative
concept and design
principles. He stresses
the importance of
seeing, feeling, and
responding to
possibilities while
synthesizing realism
with abstractionism.
Webb covers a broad
spectrum of subjects
beyond traditional
landscapes. His
unusually sophisticated
and idiosyncratic
approach to watercolor
is set forth in his
three books:
“Watercolor Energies,”
“Webb on Watercolor,”
and “Composition For
The Painter.” In
these books he explores
design, expression and
the philosophy of art.
He has also made five
instructional DVDs.
Sixty years as a
professional artist back
up Webb’s current
activities in painting,
lecturing, jurying and
writing. As an invited
instructor he has
conducted hundreds of
workshops in 50 states
and throughout the
world. In 2006 American

included the American
Watercolor Society’s
Bronze Medal of Honor,

Medal, the Alan
Chiara and the
